Lake Atitlan

Rivers, Lakes, and Seas

Lake Atitlan is a beautiful mountain lake created by a huge caldera volcanic event 70,000 years ago. Lake Atitlan is 1,500 meters above sea level, 12 miles long, 6 miles wide and surrounded by three large volcanoes. These special conditions make it a hotspot for bird life, especially migratory species. Unfortunately, I was there at the wrong time of year to see the migrations however there were plenty of great residential birds around too.

American Coot

Common Gallinule
Ruddy Crake – This is an important bird. According to Andreas, I am only the second person to have seen the bird around Lake Atitlan. Andreas was very excited when I showed him the photos and has shared the information and notified his local birding friends of the observation as well!
