A Country Full Of Birds… (by Jason)

The Jungle

Guatemala is filled with dense jungle. I’ve decided to split this habitat type into two, based on their geographic locations. The jungle around Lake Atitlan is mountainous and consists of a mix of tropical plant species mixed with old conifers and pines. This makes it very different to the dense tropical rainforest you see in the northern lowland parts of the country that border Mexico. Therefore, as you would expect, there are plenty of different species at each location.

Around Lake Atitlan (Santiago, Quixaya & the Hills of Antigua)

Blue-crowned Chlorophonia
Bushy-crested Jay
Common Tody-flycatcher
Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush

Resplendent Quetzal

The Resplendent Quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala and for good reason. It is a beautiful and rare bird with a bright red chest and 2meter long tail feathers. These birds have been celebrated in Guatemala for thousands of years with ancient temples such as TIKAL designed to echo their bird call when you clap at its base.
